St. Croix is one of three U.S. Virgin Islands (the others are St. Thomas and St. John) colonized by the Danish in the 17th century, but purchased by the U.S. in 1917 under President Theodore Roosevelt. French place names still linger on St. Lucia, Dominica and Grenada, even though all later became British colonies.
